7 Lesser Known Benefits of Pure Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been considered as an alternative to make fried foods healthier. But in fact, many of the benefits of virgin coconut oil are still not realized.

Many studies have shown that adding coconut oil to your diet and your people can be one of the easiest ways to improve your health, well-being, appearance and even sex life.

Here are the benefits of virgin coconut oil that many people don’t realize.

1. Helps you lose weight

A meta-analysis of 13 studies published in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) can help you lose weight when they replace long-chain triglycerides (such as those from soy and canola oil) in your diet.

The Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology suggests that MCTs in coconut oil can increase food-induced thermogenesis by as much as 6 percent.

Another study found MCTs increased 24-hour energy expenditure in humans by 5 percent. Now, burning 100-120 extra calories per day may not sound like a lot, but in a year, that amounts to at least 36,000 calories.

2. Kills bacteria

Quoting Eat This, Not That, about half of the fatty acids in coconut oil are lauric acid. Lauric acid is very good at killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Hence, the benefits of virgin coconut oil are also to prevent infection when used externally. But it must be pure coconut oil, not processed.

On the other hand, when you drink virgin coconut oil, it reacts with an enzyme to form monoglycerides called monolaurin. Monolaurin is also great for killing such dangerous pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and yeast Candida albicans, which is a common source of yeast infection.
